THE HISTORY OF COMPUTER
Our today’s world computers are behind every device that has something to do with the word technology user friendliness hi-tech digital and so on.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first known use of the word "computer" was in 1613 in a book called The Yong Mans Gleanings by English writer Richard Braithwaite. The word computer has become part of English language since 1646.
According to the oxford English dictionary the word computer was first used to describe a mechanical calculating device in 1897.
One of the reason for developing calculating machine was to prepare table of numbers first for navigation and then for artillery full stop before electronic computers were invented around 1940 the people who prepare this table were computers since they prepare computation and machines designed to perform this calculation were referred to as calculator and tabulator not computers.

HISTORY ABOUT CHARLES BABBAGE
Do you ever wonder who you have to thank for the powerful desktop or laptop you are now using for practically everything you do? You might say all thanks should be given to the computer companies of today but in fact, you have Charles Babbage to thank. The name might not be familiar to you just yet but read on because pretty soon, “Charles Babbage” will be on your mind every time you use your computer.
Who is Charles Babbage?
Charles Babbage was born on Dec. 26, 1791 in England. He was a polymath and became a mathematician, mechanical engineer, inventor, and philosopher.
He contributed too many different scientific fields but his most famous work is designing a programmable computing device.
Charles Babbage is considered the “father of the computer” and is given credit for devising the first ever mechanical computer. His design served as the blue print for other, more complex machines.
FIRST COMPUTING DEVICE
A portion of Babbage's Difference engine.
Charles Babbage, an English mechanical engineer and polymath, originated the concept of a programmable computer. Considered the "father of the computer", He conceptualized and invented the first mechanical computer in the early 19th century. After working on his revolutionary difference engine, designed to aid in navigational calculations, in 1833 he realized that a much more general design, an Analytical Engine, was possible. The input of programs and data was to be provided to the machine via punched cards, a method being used at the time to direct mechanical looms such as the Jacquard loom. For output, the machine would have a printer, a curve plotter and a bell. The machine would also be able to punch numbers onto cards to be read in later. The Engine incorporated an arithmetic logic unit, control flow in the form of conditional branching and loops, and integrated memory, making it the first design for a general-purpose computer that could be described in modern terms as Turing-complete.
The machine was about a century ahead of its time. All the parts for his machine had to be made by hand – this was a major problem for a device with thousands of parts. Eventually, the project was dissolved with the decision of the British Government to cease funding. Babbage's failure to complete the analy

ENGLISH ESSAY QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS
1. Write a letter to your friend explaining three reasons why our parents must pay taxes to the government.
St. Emmanuel International School,
P.O. Box Lg6,
Legon, Accra.
17th April 2024.
Dear Brother Ebo,
It has been a while since I got in touch with you, but I do not doubt that you are doing well. I hope Aunty Grace and Baby Jane are doing very well. I miss them so much and look forward to reuniting with the family when school vacates.
Two weeks ago, I had a chat with Mum and Dad, and they made it clear that they are doing all they can to avoid paying taxes to the government. I tried to explain things to them, but they were not ready to listen.
I am therefore writing this letter to you to explain three reasons why I believe our parents must pay taxes to the government.
Taxes, according to Mr. Atto, my social studies teacher at school, is a compulsory contribution by individuals and businesses to the government to raise revenue for several good reasons.
Brother Ebo, I believe that the decision of Mum and Dad not to pay taxes is wrong due to the good reasons why people must pay taxes.
Foremost, the government uses the tax collected to develop the country. If the government does not get taxes, it will be impossible for the government to run the country well. So if our parents decide not to pay the tax, it means the government cannot improve and develop the country for us.
Again, once our parents pay taxes, the government can raise enough revenue to build new schools, hospitals, and roads. The Free SHSs we are enjoying today are financed through taxes as well. If we fail to get more taxes, we cannot keep providing Free SHS to the children of Ghana.
Finally, our parents need to pay taxes because, the government can raise more money to pay public sector workers such as teachers, doctors, and police officers who work in public institutions. The salaries of my teachers are paid out of these taxes, hence encouraging mum and dad to honour their tax obligations to the government is a good thing to do.
Those who do not pay taxes are not good citizens and can be arrested. I do not want our parents to be arrested hence, Brother Ebo, do your best to explain these to mum and dad. I know they will listen to you.
Please send my greetings to Aunty Grace and Baby Jane, and hope to see you all again.
Yours sincerely,
Christian
2. Write a letter to your brother and give him three reasons why you want to study a particular programme at the SHS.
Quainoo School of Excellence,
P.O. Box Lg6,
Legon, Accra.
17th April, 2024.
Hello Francis,
I hope you are doing well and in good health. I am doing well and also preparing for our upcoming mock for the 2024 BECE which is scheduled to be written in June.
Unless, I forget, how is Grandma Joyce, Johnson, and Jack his little poppy? I am very sure they are all doing very well.
Brother Francis, I am writing this letter to help you know the programme I want to study at the SHS after the BECE and to also give you three reasons why I want to study that particular programme.
Mum has been trying to convince me to study General Arts, but I have an interest in Home Economics instead. This programme happens to be the one I intend to study at the SHS in 2024.
The reasons for the choice are that, foremost, I want to gain practical knowledge and skills after my secondary education which can help me start a small business as a caterer. If I learn general arts as mum is suggesting, I will not attain this objective.
Furthermore, my career ambition is to become a famous chef, I am not sure being a general art student can help me become what I want to be in the future. Since I intend to work in a big hotel in the future as a chef, home economics at the SHS will give me the foundation I need.
Finally, Brother Francis, I love cooking, and it is my hobby. During Aunty Jane’s wedding, I was part of those who cooked and baked all the nice meals for the wedding. I loved everything that was done in the kitchen by the professional chefs and caterers and so, I want to take after them.
I believe, for these reasons, you are convinced enough to help me choose my schools and Home Economics programmes during the BECE registration.
Well, I have to get back to my books now. Kindly send my greetings to the entire family, especially Grandma Joyce.
Yours sincerely,
Quainoo
3. Your friend has invited you to his birthday party, give him three reasons why you cannot attend the party.
Enchill Educational Complex,
P.O. Box 01,
Ayanfuri.
17th April, 2024.
Hello Bertrand,
It was great to hear from you last week, and I felt excited that you are making study progress with your school work.
I’ve been meaning to write this all-important reply to your letter since I got your last letter, but things kept cropping up, and I’m afraid I haven’t done so until now. But it is better late than never.
I am so excited you are planning your 16th Birthday with Mum, and thanks for the invitation for the party. I have been looking forward to such an opportunity to see you again since I moved to Kumasi to stay with my Uncle, however; it will not be possible for me to attend your 16th Birthday party.
One of the reasons why I cannot come to Accra for the party is that my uncle who I am currently living with in Kumasi is also celebrating his wedding on the same day. This means it will be difficult for me to come to Accra.
Again, the entire family will be traveling from Accra to Kumasi for his wedding ceremony. If I come to Accra, the entire family will be in Kumasi and my uncle has already objected to my leaving.
Since I left Accra four years ago, Mum and Dad have been longing to see me again. They will be coming to Kumasi for the wedding and are so excited to see me again. This means I cannot disappoint them.
Due to the above reasons, I cannot travel to Accra for my birthday. I am sure you understand the current situation and will forgive me. I look forward to your 17th birthday and will be around to celebrate with you.
Kindly send my warmest greetings to your Mum and everyone.
Yours sincerely,
Kojo Gyan
4. You have received news that your younger brother has been hospitalized; write a letter to him explaining three reasons why he should get well soon.
Glorious God Academy,
P.O. Box 342 DCLM,
Ayanfuri.
17th April, 2024
Dearest Gerald,
Sadly, you were not around on my graduation day, and I felt terrible about you being sick. Mummy told me you are still on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
I hope you are getting better. I thought I would drop you a line to check on your health and to see If you have got over your flu yet.
Your birthday is just a month away, and I do not want you to celebrate it while sick and on admission. I do not think such a birthday party will be fun. I do not want you to miss it, hence I am praying to God to heal you ahead of the day. There are three reasons you need to get well soon.
You know that, the first term examination is just around the corner, and you need to take part in that examination. Already, you have missed some lessons, but I am sure, you can catch up and top your class. I do not want you to miss this examination because the head teacher has promised to award all pupils who do well in the examination.
You know you are good at operating the computer in the study room very well. Since you got hospitalized, I have not been able to use the computer. I do not even know where the story books Aunty Mawusi gave us. It is my prayer that you get well soon and come home so that you can teach me how to use the computer and the location of the books as well.
Kindly get well soon. I miss you and look forward to visiting you on Saturday. Your classmates miss you too and have been asking when you will come back. They sent their warm greetings as well.
Get well soon.
Yours sincerely,
Manuel
5. Write a letter to your best friend explaining three things you are doing to pass your BECE.
Amazing Grace Preparatory School,
P.O. Box Lg6,
Ayanfuri.
17th April, 2024
Hello Bertrand,
It was great to hear from you last week through your mum, who brought your letter to me at home. I am really excited that you would like to come for a visit next month.
In your last letter, you asked me to explain three things I am doing to pass my BECE.
As you are aware, the BECE will be written in June this year, hence to make sure I am ready for the examination I have started attending an extra tuition class on weekends at Teacher Bentum’s residence. This is to help me improve my Mathematics and Integrated Science performance.
Again, I have designed my timetable for studying at home after school and in the evenings. Before this, I was lazy and spent much of my time playing video games on the computer. I have realized I need to start working hard if I want to gain admission to a category A school and study Business.
As part of my preparation for the BECE, I have joined a well-organized study group formed by the Science and Social Studies teachers for discussion topics in these subjects. It is helping me to be able to explain and discuss the topics of these subjects. Through this, I am also learning from my colleagues.
I am confident that these things I am doing will help me to get ready for the examination and come out with flying colours.
In your reply, kindly share with me, how your graduation ceremony to form one went. I just can’t wait to read about it.
Until then, stay blessed and good
Yours ever,
Paa-Joe
6. You saw your uncle in a pathethic dream that looked so real. Retell your dream to your uncle over the phone.
A DREAM THAT FELT ALL TOO REAL
Last night, I had a dream that has left an indelible mark on my mind. It was a dream that felt so real, so vivid, that I couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease that lingered long after I woke up. The dream was about you, Uncle, and it’s a memory that I feel compelled to share with you.
In the dream, I saw you standing in a desolate field, surrounded by tall, ominous trees that seemed to stretch up to the sky like skeletal fingers. The air was heavy with a sense of foreboding, and the gray, cloudy sky seemed to weigh down on you like a physical burden. You looked lost, Uncle, like you were searching for something but didn’t know where to look.
As I watched, you began to walk in circles, your eyes scanning the ground as if you were searching for a clue. Your expression was etched with worry and sadness, and I could feel the weight of your emotions bearing down on me. I tried to call out to you, to warn you of some unseen danger, but my voice was stuck in my throat. I felt helpless, Uncle, like I was trapped in a nightmare from which I couldn’t awaken.
The trees seemed to close in around you, their branches tangling together like skeletal fingers. I felt a sense of panic rising up inside me, and I tried to run towards you, to reach out and grab your hand. But my legs felt heavy, as if they were rooted to the spot.
And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, the dream ended. I woke up with a start, my heart racing and my mind reeling. But the memory of that dream has stayed with me, Uncle, and I couldn’t shake off the feeling that it was trying to tell me something.
I know it was just a dream, Uncle, but it felt so real. And I couldn’t help but wonder if it was a reflection of something deeper, something that’s been troubling you. I hope you know that I’m here for you, Uncle, and that I’ll always be here to listen and support you.
With love and concern,

I am particularly excited about the prospect of you developing our school’s sports facility. As a student-athlete, I can attest to the numerous benefits that a modern and well-equipped sports facility would bring to our school community. Here are three specific benefits that I believe I, and many of my fellow students, would gain from such a development:
Improved Physical Health and Well-being*: A state-of-the-art sports facility would provide us with a safe and conducive environment to engage in various physical activities, sports, and games. 10. Going to school every day is not easy work. Write an article for publication in your school magazine about what you would have done with your life if there was no schooling.
A LIFE WITHOUT SCHOOLING: A WORLD OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
As I sit in class, staring blankly at the chalkboard, I often find myself wondering what life would be like if there was no schooling. No waking up early, no homework, no exams. Just the freedom to do as I please, whenever I please. It’s a tantalizing prospect, and one that I think many of my fellow students can relate to.
So, what would I have done with my life if there was no schooling? Well, for starters, I think I would have spent a lot more time outdoors. I would have explored the woods behind my house, learned to identify the different types of trees and flowers, and maybe even learned to hunt and fish. I would have spent hours playing sports, riding my bike, and just enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
I also think I would have developed a passion for music and art. I would have spent hours playing my guitar, writing songs, and composing music. I would have learned to paint and draw, and maybe even become a skilled artist. Who knows, maybe I would have even become a famous musician or artist!
But it’s not all fun and games. Without schooling, I would have had to learn to fend for myself from a young age. I would have had to learn how to cook, clean, and manage my finances. I would have had to learn how to be self-sufficient and independent. And while that might sound daunting, I think it would have also been incredibly empowering.
Of course, there are also the practical considerations. Without schooling, I would not have had access to the same opportunities and resources that I have today. I might not have learned to read and write, or developed the skills and knowledge that I need to succeed in life. But I like to think that I would have found alternative ways to learn and grow.
In conclusion, a life without schooling would have been a very different one indeed. It would have been a life of freedom and adventure, but also one of hard work and self-reliance. While I’m grateful for the opportunities that schooling has provided me, I think it’s also important to appreciate the value of independence and self-directed learning.
So, the next time you’re sitting in class, feeling bored or restless, just remember: there’s a whole world of possibilities out there, waiting to be explored. And who knows, maybe one day you’ll have the chance to experience it for yourself.
11. Write a letter to an old friend explaining why he must consider TVET schools during school selection.
Enchill Educational Complex,
Post Office Box 01,
Ayanfuri.
11th May, 2024.
Dear Joycelyn,
I hope this letter finds you well. As we approach the school selection season, I wanted to take a moment to talk to you about an option that I think you should seriously consider: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools.
As you know, the traditional academic path isn’t the only way to succeed in life. In fact, many students who attend TVET schools go on to have highly successful and fulfilling careers. TVET schools offer a unique blend of theoretical and practical training, which can provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in their chosen field.
One of the main benefits of TVET schools is that they provide students with hands-on training and experience in their chosen field. This can be especially beneficial for students who learn better through practical application rather than just theoretical knowledge. Additionally, TVET schools often have strong industry connections, which can provide students with valuable networking opportunities and job prospects after graduation.
Another advantage of TVET schools is that they can provide students with a more direct path to employment. Many TVET programs are designed in collaboration with industry partners, which means that students can gain the specific skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. This can give TVET students a competitive edge in the job market, especially in fields where there is high demand for skilled workers.
I know that you’re considering your options for next year, and I strongly encourage you to look into TVET schools. Not only can they provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in your chosen field, but they can also give you a more direct path to employment and a fulfilling career.
If you’re interested in learning more about TVET schools, I’d be happy to help you research your options. There are many great TVET schools out there, and I’m confident that you can find one that aligns with your interests and career goals.
Best regards,
Hilda
12. As the main speaker in a debate on the benefits of studying computing at the JHS, write your proposal for the motion.*Proposal for the Motion: “
STUDYING COMPUTING AT THE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL HAS NUMEROUS BENEFITS
Honorable judges, worthy opponents, and fellow debaters, I am pleased to stand before you today to propose the motion that studying computing at the Junior High School (JHS) level has numerous benefits.
In today’s digital age, technology plays a vital role in shaping our world. Computing is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, it is imperative that we equip our young minds with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in an increasingly tech-driven society.
Studying computing at the JHS level offers a multitude of benefits.
Firstly, it *enhances digital literacy*. By introducing computing concepts at an early age, students develop essential skills in programming, problem-solving, and critical thinking. This foundation enables them to navigate the digital world with confidence and competence.
Secondly, *computing fosters creativity and innovation*. When students learn to code, they acquire a new language that allows them to express themselves and bring their ideas to life. This creative outlet can lead to innovative solutions, products, and services that can positively impact society.
Addition to the above, *computing prepares students for future career opportunities*. The demand for tech-savvy professionals is skyrocketing, and computing skills are becoming a prerequisite for many careers. By studying computing at the JHS level, students can gain a head start in pursuing careers in tech, science, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Lastly, *computing develops problem-solving and collaboration skills*. Computing projects often require students to work in teams, share ideas, and collectively solve complex problems. These essential life skills are transferable to various aspects of life, enabling students to become effective communicators, collaborators, and problem-solvers.
In conclusion, studying computing at the JHS level offers a wide range of benefits that can positively impact students’ academic, personal, and professional lives. I firmly believe that introducing computing concepts at an early age can empower students to become active participants in shaping the digital future.
I urge my fellow debaters to join me in advocating for the motion, and I look forward to a stimulating discussion. Thank you.

P.O. Box 001
Accra, Ghana
Dear Director-General,
WRONG USE OF TECHNOLOGY AMONG THE YOUTH
I hope this letter finds you well. As a concerned citizen, I am writing to bring to your attention three forms of wrong use of technology among the youth in Ghana. These issues not only pose a threat to the individual but also to the nation’s cybersecurity and social well-being.
Firstly Cyberbullying* One of the most prevalent forms of wrong use of technology among the youth is cyberbullying. This involves using social media platforms, messaging apps, and other online channels to harass, intimidate, or humiliate others. Cyberbullying can have severe consequences, including emotional distress, social isolation, and even suicidal tendencies.
Addition to the above, Online Scams and Fraud* Another form of wrong use of technology among the youth is online scams and fraud. Many young people are falling prey to online scams, such as phishing, identity theft, and fake online job opportunities. These scams can result in significant financial losses and damage to one’s reputation.
To combat this issue, I suggest that the Ghana Cyber Security Authority conducts regular awareness campaigns to educate the youth about online safety and security best practices. This could include workshops, social media campaigns, and partnerships with schools and universities to incorporate cybersecurity education into the curriculum.
Last but not the least to social media and Online Games* Finally, many young people in Ghana are struggling with addiction to social media and online games. Excessive screen time can lead to a range of negative effects, including social isolation, decreased attention span, and decreased physical activity.
To address this issue, I recommend that the Ghana Cyber Security Authority works with parents, educators, and healthcare professionals to promote responsible screen use habits among the youth. This could include guidelines for screen time limits, encouraging physical activity and outdoor play, and providing resources for parents to monitor and control their child’s screen time.
In conclusion, I believe that these three forms of wrong use of technology among the youth in Ghana require urgent attention. By working together, we can address these issues and promote a safer, more responsible, and more beneficial use of technology among our young people.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Zonyinah Faustina

To be honest, Auntie, I prefer living with you to living with my parents. I know this might sound strange, but I want to explain why I feel this way. Here are three reasons why I prefer living with you:
Firstly, I feel like I have more freedom and independence when I’m living with you. You trust me to make my own decisions and take care of myself, which makes me feel more grown-up and responsible. My parents, on the other hand, can be a bit overprotective at times, which makes me feel suffocated.
Secondly, I love the way you encourage me to pursue my passions and interests. You’ve always been supportive of my hobbies and dreams, and you’ve helped me to develop my skills and talents. My parents, while well-meaning, can be a bit more practical and focused on academics, which doesn’t always align with my interests.
Lastly, I feel like I can be my true self around
Yours faithfully
Jacklyn

Dear Master Sarporah Joseph,
REASONS WHY THE STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL DO NOT MAKE USE OF THE LIBRARY
I hope this letter finds you well. As the incoming library prefect, I am excited to take on the responsibility of promoting the library and encouraging students to make the most of this valuable resource. However, I have noticed that many students in our school do not make use of the library, and I would like to bring this issue to your attention.
After conducting a survey and speaking with my fellow students, I have identified three main reasons why students do not make use of the library:
To begin with, Limited awareness of library resources*: Many students are not aware of the vast array of resources available in the library, including books, journals, online databases, and study spaces. This lack of awareness can lead to students not knowing how to access or utilize these resources.
Secondly, Uninviting library environment*: The library can sometimes appear dull and uninviting, which can deter students from visiting. The lack of comfortable seating, outdated decorations, and limited technology can make the library feel like an unappealing place to study or relax.
Addition to the above, competing demands on students’ time*: With the increasing demands of academic coursework, extracurricular activities, and social media, many students feel that they do not have enough time to visit the library. This can lead to students prioritizing other activities over using the library.
To address these issues, I propose the following two solutions:
Firstly, Library orientation and promotion*: I suggest that we organize a library orientation program for new students, which would introduce them to the library’s resources and services. Additionally, we could promote the library through social media, posters, and announcements to raise awareness about its resources and events.
Moreover, Library renovation and modernization*: I propose that we renovate and modernize the library to make it a more inviting and comfortable space for students. This could include updating the furniture, adding more technology, and creating cozy study nooks. We could also consider partnering with local businesses or organizations to provide resources and services that would enhance the library experience.
I believe that by addressing these issues and implementing these solutions, we can encourage more students to make use of the library and develop a love for reading, learning, and exploration.
Thank you for considering my proposal. I look forward to discussing this further with you and working together to promote the library and enhance the learning experience for all students.
Sincerely,
Owusu Lordina

Dear Honorable Judge,
SUMMON TO APPEAR BEFORE THE SANITATION COURT
I am writing to express my sincere apologies and explain the circumstances that led to the unsanitary conditions observed by the town and country planning officials during their visit to my residence. I was deeply troubled to learn that my home was found to be in a dirty state, and I take full responsibility for the situation.
Over the past few weeks, I have been facing some personal challenges that have made it difficult for me to maintain my usual standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Specifically, I have been dealing with a family health issue that has required my attention and care. As a result, I have had to prioritize my family’s needs over household chores, leading to the accumulation of dirt and clutter.
I want to assure the court that I take the issue of sanitation and hygiene very seriously. I understand the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment, not only for my family’s well-being but also for the community at large. I am committed to rectifying the situation and ensuring that my home meets the required standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
In light of the circumstances, I humbly request the court’s understanding and leniency. I am willing to work with the relevant authorities to address the issues identified and implement measures to prevent similar situations from arising in the future.
I would like to request a meeting with the court’s sanitation officials to discuss a plan of action and demonstrate my commitment to improving the sanitation and hygiene standards at my residence. I am available to meet at your earliest convenience and am willing to comply with any directives or recommendations provided by the court.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss this further and demonstrate my commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
Sincerely,

Dear Sir Manuel
I was shocked and saddened to hear that you will be leaving our school to join another institution. I couldn’t believe that you, my favorite teacher, would be leaving us. As I thought about it, I realized that I had to write to you and express my feelings.
Sir, I have been fortunate enough to be your student for [X] years, and I must say that you have been an incredible influence on my academic and personal life. Your teaching methods, patience, and encouragement have helped me to grow and develop in ways that I never thought possible.
That’s why I’m writing to ask you not to leave our school. Here are three reasons why I think you must stay:
Firstly, _your teaching style is unique and effective_. Your ability to break down complex concepts into simple, understandable pieces has been invaluable to me and many of my classmates. Your patience and willingness to help us understand the material have made a huge difference in our academic performance. I fear that your departure will leave a void that cannot be filled by another teacher.
Secondly, _you are more than just a teacher to us_. You have been a mentor, a role model, and a friend to many of us. Your guidance and advice have helped us navigate the challenges of adolescence and high school. You have created a safe and supportive learning environment that has allowed us to grow and thrive. Your departure will not only affect our academic performance but also our emotional well-being.
Lastly, _your presence has a positive impact on the school community_. Your enthusiasm, energy, and passion for teaching are contagious and have inspired many of your colleagues to be better teachers. Your contributions to the school’s extracurricular activities and events have been invaluable, and your departure will be felt throughout the school.
Sir, I know that you must have your reasons for leaving, but I hope that you will consider the impact that your departure will have on us, your students. We need you, and I truly believe that you are making a mistake by leaving.
Please, sir, reconsider your decision. We would be forever grateful if you would stay and continue to inspire and educate us.
Sincerely,
Oppong Faustina

Dear Joycelyn,
I am writing to offer my sincerest apologies for disturbing the class with my coughing, along with my three friends. We were all struggling with a persistent cough, and despite our best efforts to stifle it, we were unable to contain ourselves.
I want to acknowledge that our behaviour was inconsiderate and disrupted the learning environment. I understand that our actions may have caused frustration and annoyance for you and our fellow classmates. For this, I am truly sorry.
I would like to explain that the coughing was not intentional, and we were not trying to be disruptive. Unfortunately, we had all been suffering from a viral infection that caused a persistent cough. We had tried to control it, but it was uncontrollable at times.
I kindly request that you consider our circumstances and not punish us too harshly. We are genuinely remorseful for our actions and promise to make amends. We will make sure to take necessary precautions in the future, such as sitting at the back of the class or stepping outside if we need to cough.
I would like to assure you that we value our education and respect the learning environment. We are committed to making a positive contribution to the class and not disrupting the lessons
Once again, I apologize for our behaviour and any inconvenience it may have caused. I hope you can understand our situation and show leniency.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

As you prepare to return, I was wondering if you could bring me some educational materials that I’ve been wanting. Here are three things that would be amazing:
Firstly, National Geographic Kids magazines*: I’ve always been fascinated by science, nature, and the environment. National Geographic Kids magazines are an excellent way for me to learn about these topics in a fun and engaging way. The magazines are filled with stunning photos, interesting articles, and interactive features that make learning a blast. I would love it if you could bring me a few issues to get me started.
Secondly, A Scratch programming book*: I’ve recently developed an interest in coding and computer programming. Scratch is a fantastic programming language designed specifically for kids like me. A Scratch programming book would be an incredible resource for me to learn more about coding and develop my skills. I’ve heard that there are many excellent books available in the US that can help me take my coding skills to the next level.

REASONS WHY THE YOUTH ENGAGE IN ILLEGAL DRUGS AND SOLUTIONS TO THESE PROBLEMS
I am writing to express my deep concern about the growing issue of youth involvement in illegal drugs. As a constituent, I believe it is essential to bring this matter to your attention and propose potential solutions.
After conducting research and speaking with peers, I have identified three primary reasons why the youth engage in illegal drugs:
Firstly, Peer pressure and social influence_: Many young people are tempted to try drugs due to pressure from their friends or social circles. The desire to fit in, be accepted, or seem “cool” can lead them to experiment with substances.
Secondly, Lack of awareness and education_: Some youth may not fully comprehend the risks and consequences associated with drug use. Insufficient education and awareness programs can leave them vulnerable to misinformation and misconception
Thirdly, Mental health and emotional struggles_: For some young people, drug use can be a coping mechanism for underlying mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma. Without proper support and resources, they may turn to substances as a way to self-medicate.
To address this issue, I propose the following three solutions:
Implement comprehensive drug education programs_: Schools and community centers should provide evidence-based, age-appropriate education on the risks and consequences of drug use. This could include workshops, lectures, and peer-led initiatives.
Increase access to mental health resources_: Governments and organizations should invest in providing accessible, affordable mental health services for young people. This could include counseling, therapy, and support groups.
Promote positive youth engagement initiatives_: Communities should develop programs that encourage young people to engage in positive activities, such as sports, arts, or volunteer work. This can help build confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of purpose, reducing the likelihood of drug use.
I believe that by addressing the root causes of youth involvement in illegal drugs, we can work towards creating a safer, healthier community for all. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this matter further with you and explore potential solutions.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear Sir Dadzie,
I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to discuss my current seating arrangement in your class. While I appreciate the effort you put into creating a comfortable and conducive learning environment, I was wondering if it would be possible to change my sitting place. Here are three reasons why I would like to request a change:
Firstly, Difficulty in seeing the board_: My current seat is located in a position where I have to strain my neck to see the board clearly. This has been causing me some discomfort and making it challenging for me to focus on the lesson. I believe that a seat closer to the front or in a more central location would greatly improve my ability to see the board and engage with the material.
Secondly, Distractions from neighbouring students_: Unfortunately, I am seated near a group of students who can be quite chatty and distracting during lessons. While I understand that some social interaction is natural and beneficial, I find it challenging to concentrate on the lesson when there are frequent conversations and disruptions nearby. A new seating arrangement would help me to focus better and minimize distractions.
Thirdly, Limited opportunities for participation_: My current seat is located in a corner of the classroom, which can make it difficult for me to participate in class discussions and activities. I often feel hesitant to speak up or contribute to the conversation because of my physical location. A more central seat would enable me to participate more easily and engage more fully with the lesson.
I would be greatly appreciate it if you could consider my request. I am confident that a new seating arrangement would help me to learn more effectively and participate more fully in class.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear Honorable District Chief Executive,
CHALLENGES THE STUDENTS FACE IN CLEANING THE SCHOOL
I hope this letter finds you well. As the school compound overseer of Prestigious New Good Foundation, I am writing to bring to your attention the challenges our students face in maintaining cleanliness in our school. Despite their best efforts, our students struggle to keep the school compound clean due to inadequate resources and infrastructure. The lack of proper waste management facilities and cleaning equipment makes it difficult for our students to keep the school clean. The existing waste bins are insufficient, and the students often have to dispose of waste in makeshift bins, which can lead to littering and environmental health issues. Furthermore, the cleaning equipment, such as brooms, mops, and buckets, are in short supply and often in poor condition.
I kindly request that you consider providing our school with the following support:
To begin with, Provision of modern waste management facilities_: I humbly request that you provide our school with modern waste bins and a functional waste management system. This would enable our students to dispose of waste properly, reducing littering and environmental health risks.
Addition to the above, Supply of cleaning equipment and materials_: I also request that you provide our school with adequate cleaning equipment and materials, such as brooms, mops, buckets, and cleaning detergents. This would enable our students to maintain a clean and healthy learning environment.
I believe that these interventions would greatly improve the cleanliness and hygiene of our school, creating a conducive learning environment for our students. I would be grateful if you could consider our request and provide the necessary support.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear Master Quainoo
EXPLANATION TO WHAT HAPPENED THAT LED THE CANCELLATON OF THE EXCURSION AND WHAT WE SHULD TO AVOID FUTURE OCCURRENCES
I am writing to express my regret and disappointment regarding the cancellation of our excursion to the Kakum National Park. As you are aware, the trip was cancelled due to student indiscipline, and I would like to take this opportunity to explain what happened and suggest ways to avoid similar incidents in the future.
On the day of the trip, some of my classmates and I were excited and eager to explore the park. However, as we were waiting for the bus to depart, some students began to misbehave, shouting, and causing a commotion. Despite warnings from our teachers, the behaviour continued, and it became clear that some students were not taking the trip seriously.
As a result, the teachers and school administrators decided to cancel the trip, citing concerns about student safety and behaviour. I was deeply disappointed, as I had been looking forward to the trip for weeks.
In hindsight, I realize that we, as students, should have taken the trip more seriously and behaved in a more responsible manner. To avoid similar incidents in the future, I suggest the following:
Firstly, Pre-trip orientation and behavioural expectations_: Before any future trips, I suggest that the school holds a mandatory orientation session to clearly outline behavioural expectations and consequences for misbehaviour. This would help to ensure that all students are aware of the rules and regulations and are committed to behaving responsibly.
Moreover, Student leadership and peer mentoring_: I propose that the school identifies student leaders who can serve as peer mentors and role models during trips and other school activities. These student leaders can help to promote positive behaviour, encourage their peers to follow the rules, and provide support and guidance when needed.
I hope that these suggestions will be considered, and I am confident that with a bit more planning and preparation, we can avoid similar incidents in the future.
Once again, I apologize for my part in the cancellation of the trip and look forward to making amends and participating in future school activities.
Sincerely,
Ayisah Freda

Dear Sir/Madam,
CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES THAT ARE WORRYING MY COMMUNITY
I am writing to bring to your attention three criminal activities that are causing concern and worry in our community. As a responsible citizen, I believe it is essential to report these incidents and seek your assistance in addressing them. The three criminal activities that are worrying our community are:
Firstly, Armed robberies_: There has been a surge in armed robberies in our area, with several incidents reported in the past few months. These robberies have resulted in the loss of valuables and, in some cases, physical harm to the victims.
Secondly, Vandalism and property damage_: Our community has experienced a significant increase in vandalism and property damage, with several cases of broken windows, damaged doors, and graffiti reported. This not only causes financial losses to property owners but also creates an environment of fear and insecurity.
Thirdly, Theft of livestock and farm produce_: Many farmers in our community have reported the theft of their livestock and farm produce. This has resulted in significant financial losses and has also affected the food security of our community.
To address these issues, I suggest the following two solutions:
Increased police presence and patrols_: I request that the police increase their presence and patrols in our community, particularly during peak hours and in areas prone to crime. This would not only deter criminals but also provide reassurance to the community that their safety and security are being taken seriously.
Community policing and collaboration_: I propose that the police work closely with the community to establish a community policing initiative. This would involve regular meetings between the police and community members to discuss crime trends, share information, and develop strategies to prevent and address crime. This collaborative approach would help to build trust between the
26. Write an article for publication in a local newspaper explaining the three dangers of drug abuse.
*THE DEADLY CONSEQUENCES OF DRUG ABUSE: A GROWING CONCERN IN OUR COMMUNITY*
As we go about our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the dangers that lurk in the shadows, threatening to destroy the lives of our loved ones and community members. One of the most insidious and destructive forces facing our society today is drug abuse. In this article, we’ll explore the three dangers of drug abuse and why it’s essential that we take immediate action to address this growing concern.
To begin with, Physical Health Risks: Drug abuse can have devastating consequences for an individual’s physical health. Depending on the type of drug being used, the risks can range from increased heart rate and blood pressure to liver damage, respiratory problems, and even death. For example, opioids can slow down breathing rates, leading to respiratory failure, while stimulants like cocaine can cause heart attacks and strokes. Moreover, sharing needles or other equipment can lead to the transmission of blood-borne diseases like HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.
Addition to the above, Mental Health Consequences: Drug abuse can also have a profound impact on an individual’s mental health. Many drugs, including marijuana and hallucinogens, can trigger psychotic episodes, anxiety, and depression. Furthermore, the withdrawal symptoms associated with drug addiction can be severe, leading to suicidal thoughts and behaviours. The mental health consequences of drug abuse can be long-lasting, even after the individual has stopped using drugs.
Moreover, Social and Economic Consequences: The dangers of drug abuse extend far beyond the individual, affecting families, communities, and society as a whole. Drug addiction can lead to financial problems, relationship breakdowns, and social isolation. Moreover, drug-related crimes, such as theft and violence, can have a devastating impact on communities, eroding trust and creating a sense of fear and insecurity. The economic consequences of drug abuse are also significant, with estimates suggesting that
27. You are the main speaker in a debate on the topic TVET is better than SHS, write your proposition for or against the motion.
*PROPOSITION FOR THE MOTION: “TVET IS BETTER THAN SHS”*
Mr Chairman, honorable judges, Accurate Timekeeper, fellow debaters, Ladies and gentlemen, I stand before you today to argue in favor of the motion that TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) is better than SHS (Senior High School).
As we gather here today, millions of young people around the world are struggling to find employment, despite having completed their secondary education. This is because the traditional SHS system focuses primarily on theoretical knowledge, leaving students ill-equipped with the practical skills required to succeed in the modern workforce.
TVET, on the other hand, offers a more holistic approach to education, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills training. By focusing on technical and vocational education, TVET programs provide students with the skills and competencies required to excel in specific industries, such as technology, healthcare, and manufacturing.
Here are a few key reasons why TVET is better than SHS:
*Employability*: TVET programs are designed to address the needs of the labour market, providing students with the skills and competencies required to secure employment immediately after graduation. In contrast, SHS graduates often require additional training or certifications to become employable.
*Practical Skills*: TVET programs focus on providing students with hands-on training and practical experience, allowing them to develop the skills and competencies required to succeed in their chosen profession. SHS programs, on the other hand, tend to focus more on theoretical knowledge.
*Cost-Effectiveness*: TVET programs are often more cost-effective than SHS programs, as they provide students with the skills and competencies required to secure employment immediately after graduation, reducing the need for additional training or certifications.
*Flexibility*: TVET programs offer students the flexibility to pursue a range of career paths, from entrepreneurship to employment in various industries. SHS programs, on the other hand, often limit students to a specific career path or academic pursuit.
In conclusion, TVET is better than SHS because it provides students with the practical skills, employability, and flexibility required to succeed in the modern workforce. As we move forward in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world, it is essential that we prioritize education and training programs that equip students with the skills and competencies required to thrive. Thank you.

Dear Sir/Madam
THE DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES OF ILLEGAL MINING: A CALL TO ACTION FOR OUR COMMUNITY
As I write this article, I am compelled to express my deep concern about the growing trend of illegal mining among the youth in our community. This destructive activity has far-reaching consequences that affect not only the environment but also the social and economic fabric of our community. In this article, I will highlight three devastating effects of illegal mining on our community and urge our leaders to take immediate action to address this issue.
Environmental Degradation: Illegal mining has resulted in the widespread destruction of our environment. The use of toxic chemicals, such as mercury and cyanide, has contaminated our water sources, soil, and air. The deforestation and land degradation caused by illegal mining have also led to soil erosion, landslides, and loss of biodiversity. Our community’s natural resources, which are essential for our survival, are being ravaged by this destructive activity.
Health Risks: The health risks associated with illegal mining are alarming. The use of toxic chemicals has led to the contamination of our water sources, resulting in the spread of water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever. The dust and particles generated by mining activities have also led to respiratory problems, such as asthma and bronchitis. Furthermore, the lack of proper safety equipment and training has resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities among the youth engaged in illegal mining.
Economic Instability: Illegal mining has also had a devastating impact on our community’s economy. The illegal mining activities have led to the loss of revenue for our community, as the minerals extracted are not accounted for or taxed. Furthermore, the destruction of our environment has resulted in the loss of livelihoods for many community members who depend on farming, fishing, and other natural resource-based activities. The economic instability caused by illegal mining has also led to increased poverty, inequality, and social unrest in our community.
Call to Action: The effects of illegal mining on our community are devastating and far-reaching. It is imperative that our leaders take immediate action to address this issue. We urge the government to:
- Increase enforcement and monitoring of mining activities
- Provide alternative livelihoods and training programs for the youth
- Implement sustainable and environmentally-friendly mining practices. We also call on our community members to report any illegal mining activities and to support initiatives that promote sustainable development and environmental conservation.
Together, we can protect our community’s natural resources, promote economic stability, and ensure a healthy and prosperous future for our youth.

One significant national event I’ve witnessed in Ghana is the inauguration of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s second term in office on January 7, 2021.
The event took place at the Black Star Square in Accra, amidst tight security and adherence to COVID-19 protocols. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including former presidents, government officials, traditional leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps.
As President Akufo-Addo took the oath of office, administered by the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and expectation. The President’s speech emphasized his commitment to addressing the country’s challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, economic development, and infrastructure expansion.
The event showcased Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, with performances by traditional dance groups and musical artists. It was a moment of national pride, as Ghanaians came together to witness the peaceful transfer of power and the beginning of a new term in office for the President.
Overall, the inauguration ceremony was a testament to Ghana’s democratic growth and stability, and I felt honored to have witnessed this significant national event.
One national event that I’ve witnessed in Ghana on March 6th is the Independence Day Parade.
32. Narrate how 6th March is Celebrated
THE INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
On March 6, 1957, Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule, and every year since then, the country celebrates this momentous occasion. The Independence Day Parade is a grand event that showcases the country’s rich cultural heritage, military might, and national pride.
I recall witnessing the parade in Accra, where thousands of Ghanaians gathered to watch the procession. The event featured marching bands, cultural troupes, and contingents from the Ghana Armed Forces, Police Service, and other security agencies. The atmosphere was electric, with spectators cheering and waving Ghanaian flags.
The highlight of the event was the presidential address, where the President of Ghana delivers a speech to commemorate the occasion. The speech typically reflects on the country’s progress, challenges, and future prospects.
Overall, witnessing the Independence Day Parade on March 6th was a thrilling experience that filled me with national pride and a deeper appreciation for Ghana’s history and culture.

33. Write a letter to your District Director of Education giving at least, two reasons why caning should be banned in school
Enchill Educational Complex,

11th May, 2024.
The District Director of Education,
District Education Office,
Upper Denkyira West,
Diaso Circuit.
Dear Sir/Madam,
REASONS WHY CANING SHOULD BE BANNED IN SCHOOL
I am writing to express my concern about the use of caning as a form of discipline in our schools. As a student, I have witnessed firsthand the negative effects of caning on my peers and myself. I strongly believe that caning should be banned in schools, and I would like to present two compelling reasons to support this argument.
Firstly, _caning can lead to physical and emotional harm_. Caning can cause physical injuries, such as bruises, cuts, and even broken bones. Moreover, the fear of being caned can lead to anxiety, stress, and emotional trauma. This can have long-term effects on a student’s mental health and well-being. In a learning environment, students should feel safe and supported, not fearful of physical punishment.
Secondly, _caning is an ineffective and outdated method of discipline_. Research has shown that caning does not improve behavior or academic performance. Instead, it can create a culture of fear and resentment, leading to more behavioral problems and decreased motivation. Modern approaches to discipline, such as positive reinforcement, restorative justice, and counseling, have been proven to be more effective in promoting positive behavior and academic success.
In addition to these two reasons, I would like to mention that caning can also undermine the teacher-student relationship, create a negative school climate, and perpetuate a cycle of violence.
I urge you to consider the negative consequences of caning and explore alternative approaches to discipline that prioritize student well-being, safety, and success. I believe that our schools should be places of learning, growth, and development, not fear and punishment.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this issue.
Sincerely,
Boakye Faustina
34. Write a story which ends with the expression: ‘………what a dream!‟
As I lay in bed, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of excitement and nervousness. Tomorrow was the day I would finally meet my favorite author, Jane Smith. I had been reading her books since I was a teenager, and her stories had inspired me to pursue my own dreams of becoming a writer.
I drifted off to sleep, imagining what it would be like to meet Jane Smith in person. I dreamed that I was walking into a beautiful bookstore, filled with shelves upon shelves of books. Jane Smith was standing behind the counter, smiling at me as I approached.
“Hello,” she said, extending her hand. “I’m so glad you could make it.”
I shook her hand, feeling a little starstruck. “It’s an honor to meet you,” I replied.
Jane Smith smiled and asked me about my own writing. We talked for hours, discussing everything from plot twists to character development. I was amazed by how down-to-earth and kind she was.
As the day drew to a close, Jane Smith handed me a copy of her latest book. “I want you to have this,” she said. “Keep writing, and never give up on your dreams.”
I took the book, feeling a sense of gratitude and wonder. Was this really happening?
I woke up to the sound of my alarm blaring in my ear. I sat up in bed, rubbing my eyes. It had all been a dream.
I looked around my room, feeling a little disappointed. But then I smiled. Even if it was just a dream, it had felt so real. And who knows? Maybe someday I would really meet Jane Smith, and we would talk about writing and books.
I laughed to myself as I got out of bed. What a dream!
35. As secretary of the Friends of the Environment club, write the speech you would give to the students of your school on the need to keep the environment clean
SPEECH DELIVERED BY DARKWAH BENEDICTA ON THE NEED TO KEEP THE ENVIRONMENT CLEAN
The Honourable Proprietor, Headmaster and His Assistant, esteemed teachers, honored guests, Fellow students, Ladies and Gentlemen
I stand before you today as the secretary of the Friends of the Environment club to talk about a crucial issue that affects us all: the need to keep our environment clean.
As students, we spend a significant amount of time on our school campus, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that we leave it in a better state than we found it. However, if we take a closer look around us, we’ll notice that our campus is not as clean as it should be. We see litter scattered everywhere, from plastic bottles to food wrappers, and even broken furniture.
But why is it so important to keep our environment clean? Firstly, a clean environment is essential for our health and well-being. When our surroundings are dirty, it can lead to the spread of diseases and allergies. For example, mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water can cause malaria and other diseases.
Secondly, a clean environment is crucial for our planet’s sustainability. The Earth’s natural resources are finite, and it’s up to us to conserve them. When we litter and pollute, we’re not only harming ourselves, but also future generations.
Thirdly, keeping our environment clean is a matter of pride and responsibility. As students of this school, we should be proud of our campus and strive to maintain its beauty. We should take ownership of our actions and ensure that we’re not contributing to the problem.
So, what can we do to keep our environment clean? Firstly, we can start by reducing our use of single-use plastics. Instead of using plastic bags and water bottles, we can switch to reusable alternatives.
Secondly, we can make a conscious effort to recycle and properly dispose of our waste. We can use the recycling bins provided on campus and ensure that we’re not mixing recyclable materials with non-recyclable ones.
Thirdly, we can participate in clean-up initiatives and activities organized by the Friends of the Environment club. We can

The Honourable Member of Parliament,
Upper Denkyira West Constituency,
Post Office Box 01

Dear Honourable Rudolf Amoako,
RISE IN ARMED ROBBERY IN OUR AREA
I am writing to bring to your attention the growing concern of armed robbery in our constituency. Over the past few months, there has been a significant increase in reported cases of armed robbery, leaving residents feeling unsafe and insecure.
As a constituent, I am worried about the impact this is having on our community. The rise in armed robbery is not only affecting individuals but also businesses, which are being targeted by these criminals. This is leading to a decline in economic activity and a sense of fear among residents.
I urge you to take immediate action to address this issue. I suggest the following two measures to help check the rise in armed robbery:
*Increased Police Presence: I propose that the Ghana Police Service increase its presence in our constituency, particularly in areas that have been identified as hotspots for armed robbery. This could include deploying more police officers to patrol the streets, setting up checkpoints, and increasing the number of police vehicles on the roads.
*Installation of CCTV Cameras: I recommend that CCTV cameras be installed in strategic locations throughout the constituency, such as major intersections, markets, and other public areas. This would help to deter criminals, as they would know that their actions are being recorded. Additionally, CCTV footage could be used to identify and apprehend perpetrators.
I believe that these measures, combined with community engagement and education, can help to reduce the incidence of armed robbery in our constituency. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this further with you and explore ways to work together to address this issue.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Darkwah Benedicta
37. Write a story which ends with the sentence: We arrived just in time to save the situation
As I drove down the winding road, my heart racing with every passing mile, I couldn’t help but think about the frantic phone call I had received from my best friend, Emma. Her family’s bakery was in trouble – a fire had broken out in the kitchen, and the fire department was still minutes away.
I had immediately dropped everything and rushed to the scene, my friend Alex by my side. We had been friends with Emma since childhood, and the thought of losing her family’s beloved bakery was unbearable. As we turned the corner, we could see the bakery’s sign in the distance, surrounded by a haze of smoke. My heart sank, but Alex’s calm and steady voice reassured me, “We’ll get there, don’t worry.” We sped up, the tires screeching as we took the final turn. The bakery came into view, and we could see Emma’s family frantically trying to put out the flames. The fire was spreading fast, but we could see that it was still contained within the kitchen.
Without hesitation, Alex and I leapt out of the car and rushed towards the bakery. We grabbed fire extinguishers and joined Emma’s family in the fight to put out the flames.
The next few minutes were a blur of heat, smoke, and adrenaline. But as the fire department arrived and took over, we realized that our quick thinking and fast action had made all the difference.
We arrived just in time to save the situation.

Dear Brother Thompson,
I hope this letter finds you well. I have some fantastic news to share with you. Yesterday, Dad received the “National Best Farmer’s Award” at a grand ceremony held in the capital city. I wish you were here to witness it, but I’ll try to paint a vivid picture for you.
The ceremony took place at the International Conference Centre, and it was attended by dignitaries from the Ministry of Agriculture, farmers from all over the country, and other prominent guests. The atmosphere was electric, with a sense of pride and accomplishment hanging in the air.
Dad was beaming with pride as he walked up to the stage to receive the award. The Master of Ceremonies announced his name, and the audience erupted in applause. I could see the tears of joy welling up in his eyes as he accepted the award.
The award itself was a beautifully crafted trophy, accompanied by a certificate and a cash prize. But more than the physical award, it was the recognition of Dad’s hard work and dedication to farming that made it truly special.
During his acceptance speech, Dad thanked the organizers, the Ministry of Agriculture, and, of course, our family for their unwavering support. He also spoke about the challenges faced by farmers in our country and the need for sustainable farming practices.
The ceremony was followed by a reception, where we got to meet and greet with other farmers, officials, and guests. It was a wonderful opportunity to network and learn from others in the industry. I know how proud you are of Dad’s accomplishments, and I wish you could have been here to share in the joy. But I hope this letter gives you a sense of the excitement and pride we felt yesterday.
Take care, and I look forward to sharing more about the ceremony when we talk next.
Best regards,

11th May, 2024.
Hi Cecilia,
Hope this letter finds you well. I was thinking about how much technology has impacted our lives, especially when it comes to learning. I wanted to share with you three ways in which computers have made learning easier for students like us.
Firstly, the internet has made it possible for us to access a vast amount of information and educational resources from all over the world. We can easily search for topics we’re studying in school and find relevant articles, videos, and websites that help us understand the concepts better. This has been a game-changer for me, especially when I’m working on research projects or studying for exams.
Secondly, computers have enabled us to take online courses and participate in virtual classrooms. This has been especially helpful for students who may not have access to certain courses or resources in their local schools. We can now learn from teachers and experts from all over the world, which has opened up so many new opportunities for us.
Lastly, computers have made it easier for us to collaborate with our classmates and work on group projects. We can share documents and files online, communicate with each other through email or messaging apps, and even work on projects together in real-time using tools like Google Docs. This has saved us so much time and hassle, and has made it easier for us to work together effectively.
Overall, I think computers have revolutionized the way we learn and have made it so much easier for us to access information, collaborate with others, and take control of our own learning.
Write back and let me know what you think!
Yours ever
Lordina
40. Write an article for publication in a national newspaper discussing at least two reasons why students should cultivate the habit of reading
THE POWER OF READING: EMPOWERING STUDENTS FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE
As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, it has become increasingly evident that reading is an essential skill for students to cultivate. In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and neglect the simple yet profound act of reading. However, as we’ll explore in this article, developing a reading habit can have a transformative impact on students’ academic, personal, and professional lives.
Improved Academic Performance: Reading is the foundation upon which all learning is built. When students cultivate a reading habit, they open themselves up to a world of knowledge, ideas, and perspectives. Reading exposes students to new vocabulary, sentence structures, and writing styles, which can significantly improve their language skills and overall academic performance. Moreover, reading helps students develop critical thinking skills, analytical abilities, and problem-solving strategies, all of which are essential for success in various subjects, including mathematics, science, and social studies.
Enhanced Creativity and Empathy: Reading has the power to transport us to new worlds, introduce us to diverse characters, and challenge our assumptions about the world. Through reading, students can develop their creative thinking skills, imagination, and innovation. By exposing themselves to different genres, styles, and authors, students can broaden their perspectives, challenge their biases, and cultivate empathy and understanding for others. This, in turn, can help students become more compassionate, open-minded, and engaged members of society.
In addition to improved academic performance and enhanced creativity and empathy, reading can also have numerous other benefits for students. These include:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved focus and concentration
- Increased self-awareness and self-confidence
- Enhanced communication and social skills
- Greater appreciation for different cultures and histories
In conclusion, cultivating a reading habit is essential for students’ academic, personal, and professional growth. By developing a love for reading, students can improve their academic performance, enhance their creativity and empathy, and unlock a world of knowledge, ideas, and perspectives. As educators, parents, and guardians, it’s our responsibility to encourage and support students in developing a reading habit that will serve them well throughout their lives.
41. Describe one national event that took place recently and state at least two effects it had on the people in your area
THE RISE IN EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE
One significant national event that had far-reaching impacts is the rise in extreme weather events due to climate change. In Ghana, for instance, heavy rainfall and flooding have become increasingly common, affecting many communities.
Firstly, Displacement and Property Damage_: Heavy rainfall and flooding have led to the displacement of people, damage to homes, and destruction of crops. This has resulted in significant economic losses for individuals and families ¹.
Secondly, Health Risks_: The flooding has also increased the risk of waterborne diseases, such as cholera and typhoid fever. Additionally, the displacement of people has put a strain on local healthcare facilities, making it challenging for people to access medical care ².
These events have highlighted the need for Ghana to invest in climate resilience and adaptation measures to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events on local communities.
42. Write a narrative essay describing a memorable experience you had during a school trip
A MEMORABLE SCHOOL TRIP TO THE SCIENCE MUSEUM
One of the most memorable experiences I had during a school trip was when our class visited the Science Museum. It was a sunny day in May, and our excitement was palpable as we boarded the bus that would take us to our destination.
The Journey: As we travelled, our teachers handed out worksheets with questions related to the exhibits we would see at the museum. This sparked a lively discussion among my classmates and me, and we spent the rest of the journey guessing what we might learn.
Arrival and Exploration: When we arrived at the museum, we were greeted by a massive model of the solar system. Our eyes widened as we took in the sheer scale of the exhibit. We spent the morning exploring the galleries, marvelling at the interactive displays and learning about everything from dinosaurs to space exploration.
The Highlight of the Trip: The highlight of the trip came when we visited the planetarium. We sat in the darkened theatre, surrounded by a massive dome screen, and watched in awe as the stars and planets whirled above us. The narrator’s voice was soothing, and the visuals were breathtaking. It felt as though we were floating in space.
Reflection: As we left the museum and boarded the bus to return to school, we were all buzzing with excitement. We had learned so much, and the interactive exhibits had made the experience enjoyable and engaging. The trip had sparked a new interest in science among many of my classmates, and it’s a memory that I still cherish today.
That school trip to the Science Museum was a memorable experience that not only deepened my understanding of science but also instilled in me a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around me.

Dear Mr Quainoo,
IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SCHOOL LIBRARY AND WHY THEY ARE NECESSARY
I hope this letter finds you well. As a student at Enchill Educational Complex have had the privilege of utilizing our school library on numerous occasions. While our library is a valuable resource, I believe there are several improvements that could be made to enhance its effectiveness and better serve the student body. In this letter, I would like to suggest three improvements to the school library and outline why they are necessary.
Expansion of Digital Resources: Our school library's digital resources are limited, making it difficult for students to access relevant and up-to-date information. I suggest that the library subscribes to more online databases, e-book platforms, and digital magazines. This would provide students with a wider range of resources to support their research and learning. Additionally, digital resources would enable students to access information remotely, making it easier for them to work on projects and assignments outside of school hours.
Comfortable and Collaborative Study Spaces: The current library seating arrangement is largely focused on individual study, with limited options for group work and collaboration. I propose that the library incorporates more comfortable and flexible study spaces, such as bean bags, sofas, and group work tables. This would enable students to work together more effectively, promoting a sense of community and teamwork. Moreover, comfortable study spaces would encourage students to spend more time in the library, leading to increased productivity and academic achievement.
Regular Author Talks and Literary Events: To foster a love of reading and learning, I suggest that the library hosts regular author talks and literary events. This could include book clubs, writing workshops, and poetry readings. Such events would provide students with opportunities to engage with authors, learn about different genres and writing styles, and develop their critical thinking and communication skills. Moreover, these events would help to create a sense of excitement and enthusiasm around reading, encouraging students to explore new authors and topics.
In conclusion, I believe that these three improvements would significantly enhance the school library's ability to support student learning and academic achievement. I would be happy to discuss these suggestions further and explore ways to implement them.
Thank you for considering my proposals.
Sincerely,
Mensah Marfo Anastasia
44. In your opinion, should students be required to wear school uniforms? Write an argumentative essay supporting your viewpoint with reasons.
SHOULD STUDENTS BE REQUIRED TO WEAR SCHOOL UNIFORMS
The debate about whether students should be required to wear school uniforms has been ongoing for years. While some argue that uniforms restrict personal expression and creativity, I firmly believe that students should be required to wear school uniforms. In this essay, I will present three compelling reasons to support my viewpoint: promoting equality and inclusivity, improving academic focus, and enhancing school safety.
Promoting Equality and Inclusivity: One of the primary benefits of school uniforms is that they promote equality and inclusivity among students. When students wear casual clothes, socioeconomic disparities can become apparent, leading to feelings of inferiority or embarrassment among those who cannot afford trendy or expensive clothing. School uniforms eliminate this problem by ensuring that all students wear the same attire, regardless of their financial background. This fosters a sense of unity and equality, allowing students to focus on their academic and personal growth rather than their clothing.
Improving Academic Focus: Another significant advantage of school uniforms is that they improve academic focus. When students wear casual clothes, they can be distracted by fashion trends, logos, and other visual elements that may not be conducive to a learning environment. School uniforms, on the other hand, create a professional and respectful atmosphere, encouraging students to concentrate on their studies rather than their attire. By minimizing fashion distractions, school uniforms help students develop a stronger work ethic and a greater commitment to their academic pursuits.
Enhancing School Safety: Finally, school uniforms can enhance school safety by making it easier to identify non-students on campus. When students wear casual clothes, it can be challenging for administrators and security personnel to distinguish between students and outsiders. School uniforms provide a clear visual identifier, allowing school officials to quickly recognize and respond to potential security threats. This is particularly important in today’s world, where school safety is a top concern for educators, parents, and students alike.
Conclusion: In conclusion, requiring students to wear school uniforms is a policy that offers numerous benefits. By promoting equality and inclusivity, improving academic focus, and enhancing school safety, school uniforms create a positive and productive learning environment. While some may argue that uniforms restrict personal expression, I firmly believe that the advantages of school uniforms far outweigh any perceived drawbacks. Ultimately, school uniforms are an effective way to promote a culture of respect, responsibility, and academic excellence in our schools.

11th May, 2024.
Hi Cecilia,
I hope this letter finds you well. I was thinking about you and our conversations about school, and I wanted to take a moment to share with you why I believe attending school is so important.
Firstly, education is the key to unlocking your future. School provides you with the foundation and skills necessary to succeed in life. By attending school, you’ll have access to quality teachers, resources, and facilities that will help you develop your talents and interests. Secondly, school is a great place to make lifelong friends and connections. You’ll meet people from different backgrounds and cultures, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn from their experiences and perspectives. These relationships can lead to valuable networks and opportunities that will benefit you throughout your life.
Thirdly, attending school will help you develop important life skills such as discipline, time management, and critical thinking. These skills will serve you well not only in your academic pursuits but also in your personal and professional life.

46. Write an article for publication in a National Newspaper discussing at least three causes of teenage pregnancy and suggest two ways of solving this issue
TACKLING TEENAGE PREGNANCY: A CALL TO ACTION
Teenage pregnancy remains a pressing concern in our nation, with far-reaching consequences for the affected individuals, their families, and the community at large. According to recent statistics, teenage pregnancy rates in our country are alarmingly high, with many young lives being altered forever. As we seek to address this issue, it is essential to understand the underlying causes and work towards finding effective solutions.
Causes of Teenage Pregnancy are:
Lack of Comprehensive Sex Education: Many teenagers lack access to accurate and comprehensive information about sex, contraception, and reproductive health. This knowledge gap can lead to uninformed decisions, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancies.
Socioeconomic Factors: Poverty, limited access to education, and unemployment can contribute to teenage pregnancy. In some cases, young people may feel that parenthood is a viable option due to limited opportunities and a lack of hope for their future.
Cultural and Social Norms: In some communities, teenage pregnancy may be perpetuated by cultural and social norms that emphasize early marriage and childbearing. These norms can be deeply ingrained, making it challenging for young people to make informed choices about their reproductive health.
Solving the Issue of Teenage Pregnancy
To address the complex issue of teenage pregnancy, we must adopt a multifaceted approach that involves both prevention and support.
Implement Comprehensive Sex Education: Schools and communities must provide young people with accurate, age-appropriate information about sex, contraception, and reproductive health. This education should be inclusive, addressing the needs of all students, regardless of their background or orientation.
Provide Access to Reproductive Health Services: Adolescents must have access to confidential, youth-friendly reproductive health services, including contraception, counselling, and prenatal care. This support can help prevent unintended pregnancies and ensure that young people receive the care they need to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
Conclusion
Teenage pregnancy is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive and sustained response. By addressing the root causes of teenage pregnancy and providing young people with the knowledge, skills, and support they need, we can work towards creating a brighter future for all. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that adolescents have access to the resources and services necessary to make informed choices about their reproductive health. Together, we can make a difference and create a society that values and supports the well-being of all its young people.
47. Write a story which ends with the sentence, ‘I will never disrespect my parents again’
THE LESSON LEARNED
As a teenager, I often found myself at odds with my parents. I felt they were too strict, too controlling, and just didn’t understand me. I would frequently argue with them, dismissing their advice and rolling my eyes at their concerns.
One day, my parents sat me down and told me that they had arranged for me to spend a week with my grandparents in a rural village. I was furious. I didn’t want to leave my friends, my phone, or my comfortable life behind. I felt like I was being punished, and I rebelled against the idea.
But my parents were firm, and eventually, I found myself on a bus headed to the village. As I arrived, I was struck by the simplicity and beauty of the rural life. My grandparents welcomed me warmly, and I began to help them with their daily chores.
The first few days were tough. I struggled to adapt to the physical labor, the lack of amenities, and the quiet pace of life. But as the days passed, I started to appreciate the beauty of the village, the kindness of the people, and the wisdom of my grandparents.
One day, while working in the fields, my grandfather shared with me the story of how he and my grandmother had struggled to build their life together. They had faced poverty, hunger, and hardship, but they had never given up. They had worked tirelessly, supporting each other, and eventually, they had built a comfortable life.
As I listened to their story, I felt a deep sense of shame and regret. I realized that I had been taking my parents and their sacrifices for granted. I had been disrespecting them, ignoring their advice, and not appreciating the comforts and opportunities they had provided for me.
As I reflected on my behaviour, I felt a surge of gratitude and love for my parents. I realized that they had been working hard to provide for me, to give me a better life, and to help me grow into a responsible and capable person.
As I prepared to leave the village and return home, my grandparents hugged me tightly and told me how proud they were of me. I knew that I had learned a valuable lesson, one that would stay with me for the rest of my life.
As I stepped off the bus and back into my familiar life, I felt a sense of determination and renewal. I walked into my house, hugged my parents tightly, and said, “I will never disrespect my parents again.”
48. Write an article for publication in a national newspaper on three effects of poor disposal of waste on the people and suggest two ways of solving the problem.
THE SCOURGE OF POOR WASTE DISPOSAL: A THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT
The improper disposal of waste has become a pressing concern in our nation, with far-reaching consequences for the health and well-being of our citizens, as well as the environment. The effects of poor waste disposal are multifaceted and devastating, and it is imperative that we take immediate action to address this issue.
Effects of Poor Waste Disposal
Environmental Pollution: The improper disposal of waste leads to the contamination of our air, water, and soil. Toxic chemicals and pollutants from waste seep into the ground, polluting our water sources and posing a significant threat to aquatic life. Moreover, the burning of waste releases harmful gases into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change and respiratory problems.
Health Risks: Poor waste disposal is a breeding ground for disease-carrying pests and rodents. The proliferation of these pests can lead to the spread of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever. Furthermore, the inhalation of toxic fumes from burning waste can cause respiratory problems, including asthma and lung cancer.
Economic Consequences: The improper disposal of waste also has significant economic implications. The pollution of our environment and the spread of diseases can lead to a decline in tourism, affecting local businesses and the national economy. Moreover, the cost of cleaning up polluted areas and treating waste-related illnesses can be prohibitively expensive.
Solving the Problem
To address the issue of poor waste disposal, we must adopt a multifaceted approach that involves both individual and collective action.
Implement Effective Waste Management Systems: The government must invest in modern waste management systems that prioritize recycling, composting, and proper disposal. This can include the creation of designated waste collection centers, the distribution of waste bins, and the implementation of regular waste collection schedules.
Promote Public Awareness and Education: Raising public awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal is crucial. Educational campaigns can be launched to inform citizens about the risks associated with poor waste disposal and the benefits of proper waste management. Additionally, schools can incorporate environmental education into their curricula, teaching children the importance of protecting the environment.
In conclusion, the effects of poor waste disposal are far-reaching and devastating. However, by implementing effective waste management systems and promoting public awareness and education, we can mitigate these effects and create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for future generations.

Her unwavering optimism and enthusiasm have inspired me to pursue my passions and dreams, even when faced with challenges and setbacks. Her guidance has helped me develop a strong sense of values and principles, including empathy, compassion, and respect for others.
Lessons Learned: One of the most valuable lessons my grandmother has taught me is the importance of gratitude and appreciation. She has shown me that even in the darkest of times, there is always something to be thankful for. This lesson has helped me cultivate a positive attitude and outlook on life, even when faced with difficulties and challenges.

Write a story illustrating the saying "if had I known always at last"
Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a young farmer named Kofi. Kofi worked tirelessly on his farm, growing yams and maize, which were his main source of income. One day, while working in his field, Kofi noticed a small, peculiar-looking stone. He picked it up, dusting it off, and decided to use it as a paperweight on his farmhouse table.
Years passed, and Kofi's farm flourished. However, he struggled financially, barely making ends meet. One day, a wealthy collector of rare gems visited the village. While strolling through the village, the collector saw the stone Kofi had found and was astonished. "This is a rare, valuable gemstone!" the collector exclaimed.
The collector offered Kofi a handsome sum for the stone, which would have solved all his financial struggles for a lifetime. Kofi, unaware of the stone's true value, had used it as a mere paperweight all these years.
"If I had known the stone's value earlier," Kofi often lamented, "I wouldn't have struggled so much." He realized that his life could have been different if he had recognized the gemstone's worth.
The saying "if I had known" echoed in Kofi's mind, a reminder of the opportunities missed due to lack of knowledge. From then on, Kofi made sure to learn more about the things around him, ensuring he wouldn't miss another chance.
